City’s CRU enhanced cleansing programme commences

The City’s enhanced cleaning programme at Community Residential Units (CRUs) commenced at affordable housing units in Langa and aims to improve the lives and living conditions of residents in the metro. The project is an important part of the City’s broader CRU maintenance and upgrade programme, which includes area cleaning, disinfection in and around units and pest control. 

Earlier this week, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi officially handed over the first site for enhanced cleaning to the City officials and contractors who are carrying out the work.

'The City is committed to its ongoing maintenance, enhanced cleaning and pest control projects at its rental housing. This project will first focus on the Langa, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Lwandle and Macassar community residential homes and will roll out to other areas in the metro in the coming months. This project will also make use of local labour from the various communities where it is being carried out. In addition, the local employees will receive certification, which will serve as formal recognition for their learnt expertise.

'The well-being of our residents is our top priority and we are doing everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our residents. There is much work under way in the City's CRUs and this essential cleansing programme forms part of the City's enhanced basic service delivery which aims to create and maintain healthier living spaces for residents in our city,' said Councillor Booi.

In the last five years, over 40 000 CRU tenants have benefitted from R2 billion in maintenance and upgrades. The City has further transferred ownership of over 60 000 of its rental stock units to long-standing tenants to date, with around 7 700 units still available for sale and transfer to eligible tenants. An estimated 160 000 people currently benefit from an affordable rental unit operated by the City.
